Notable facts about the home:
This piece of Loz Feliz real estate was designed in 1927 by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, for his friend, John Sowden. Lloyd Wright, a set designer at the time, decided to build a house that would incorporate the Sowdens’ love of hosting parties and “their desire for theater.” The home was built to feature modern elements as seen in Frank Lloyd Wright homes as well as Mayan touches.
Current owner, architect and designer Xorin Balbes, purchased the home in 2001 for $1.2 million and spent years renovating the home, putting in $1.6 million in restorations.
While the home boasts 5,600 square feet of living space, the most significant parts of the home is not its size, but its temple-like feeling inside, the walls of vegetation and center patio with pool.
The home has been used for Hollywood parties and productions. Parts of “Aviator” and “Project Runway: Season 6″ were filmed there and it is also rumored to be the location of the murder of Elizabeth Short — better known as the Black Dahlia murder.
Dr. George Hodel lived at the home during the time of the murder and was on the short list of the Los Angeles Police Department’s suspects. In 2003, his son, former LAPD homicide detective Steve Hodel, published a book claiming that George Hodel was indeed the killer, and murdered Short at the Sowden home.
The home was previously available for rent, starting at $1,900 a night.
