Life after R.E.M. is taking slinky frontman Michael Stipe in new directions. Or, at least, to a bigger home in which Stipe and his partner, Thomas Dozol, can create their art. For Stipe, that means sculpture, not music, and for Dozol, photographs and silkscreens.
“I wake up in the morning thinking of sculpture, not lyrics. Lyrics are too hard,” Stipe told the Wall Street Journal.
So, first things first: Stipe and Dozol have listed their penthouse at 533 Canal St. in lower Manhattan for $10.95 million. Stipe bought the place in 2007 for $5.75 million from Casey Affleck, brother of Ben Affleck, who had purchased the former industrial loft from director Gus Van Sant.

Stipe and Dozol completed the transformation of the loft, which sits in the Tribeca real estate market, where larger, warehouse spaces have long been a haven for artists. In addition to its 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, the apartment features a kitchen designed by chef Mario Batali and a huge terrace with views of the Hudson River.
